The following resources are recommended for use by individuals and bible study groups:
(1) The Bible provides the foundations of our Christian faith. Both Old and New Testaments guide us in our lives and lead us to Jesus. The Bishops of England, Wales and Scotland, keenly aware of this, have recently produced a booklet which is designed to assist people in reading and understanding the Bible. The Gift of Scripture is a teaching document which presents in an accessible way what the Catholic Church believes about the Holy Scriptures. It draws on several recent Church documents and points out their important teachings. Since it was launched in November 2005 The Gift of Scripture has been widely distributed and widely welcomed. It is attractively published by the Catholic Truth Society at £3.95. http://www.cts-online.org.uk
(2) The Gift of Scripture Unwrapped, produced by Matthew James at £1.50, provides introductory material for people looking for a way in to the bishops' document. It is designed for use in small groups of people who are looking for answers to their questions about the Bible and who wish to deepen their appreciation of Scripture. It is great value and provides material for reflection and prayer in six group sessions as well as suggestions for wider reading of the Bible. Of course The Gift of Scripture Unwrapped can also be used for individual reflection and prayer. http://www.matthew-james.co.uk
(3)A new resource for those looking for material with a truly Catholic approach for use in Bible study and prayer groups, and for lectio divina, is Take and Read. It is intended that this series will cover the four gospels and other biblical books. In the first volume on the Gospel of Mark there are twelve sessions on twelve separate passages from this gospel. The biblical text is given, followed by a detailed commentary and material for reflection and prayer. Each text is richly illustrated with artistic portrayals and contemporary scenes. Quotations from the Fathers, from spiritual writers and from Church documents are given in the margins. This is a wonderful new resource, and it is beautifully produced. It is very good value at ?8.95, and is published by Matthew James. http://www.matthew-james.co.uk |
